What a disappointing weekend it turned out to be for Brewers fans. What should have been a three-game sweep of the Dodgers, turned out to be a 1-2 series loss. The Brewers had great starting pitching from Jimmy Nelson and Zach Davies this weekend. The two starters went a combined 14 innings with, 8 hits, no runs given up, and the 17 strikeouts (11 from Jimmy Nelson on Friday). While the bullpen is not the entire source of my frustration, they are definitely responsible for a large majority of it. The Brewers took leads into the 9th inning both Friday and Saturday to eventually give up a game-tying home run on Friday, and what would be a game-winning grand slam of Saturday.
This weekend will go down as a huge missed opportunity for this team. Not only to help secure an even bigger lead in the NL Central but a sweep of the Dodgers who are 35-23 this season would go a long way to help get this team some more national attention. Outside of Milwaukee, this team doesn’t get the attention it really deserves. Last season at this time of the year, the Brewers were 14 games out of first place. To date, they currently have a 1.5 game lead.
At this point, it is like beating a dead horse. But, there are too many holes in the bullpen that need to be fixed. I struggle to understand why guys like Hughes, Feliz, and Drake are still in the bullpen. The bullpen leads MLB in losses this season and is second in innings pitched.
I am hoping things will change this week, I would rather see them bring up the young bullpen arms from the minors to pitch, rather than continually throughout out the same hot garbage to pitch the 6th, 7th, and 8th innings.
