2017 2nd Base Rankings

Tier One

  1. Jose Altuve

If Trea Turner is a 2nd baseman in your league, I will put him in this tier with Altuve. Turner is a stud, and possible 2nd, SS, and OF eligible. Top 10 player, grab him.

Altuve is clearly the best 2nd baseman in the league and a top five player. Take him and feel good about it.

Tier Two

  1. Robinson Cano

Cano went for .298 with 39 HR 103 RBI and 107 R. While 39 HR may be hard to repeat he can easily go between 25-30 again with 100 RBI and 90+ R. He is a four-category guy and a good solid player in the 2nd-3rd round with his 32 ADP.

Tier Three

  1. Daniel Murphy
  2. Brian Dozier
  3. Rougned Odor
  4. Matt Carpenter

Murphy crushed in the average department last year, a .347 AVG, while hard to replicate he can easily be a .300 hitter again. He is in a great lineup with Harper potentially hitting in front, or behind him, his RBI and Rs scored are going to be there. Plus there is the potential for a 1st and 2nd position eligibility and maybe 3rd if you are lucky. He has a three-year average batting average at .304. He set a career high in RBI last season.

Dozier is the only one in this tier that isn’t going to contribute in the average department. A career .246 hitter. He will be a good option to help out in the other four categories. He may be a good one to pair with a high average player you take earlier in the draft.

Tier Four

  1. Dee Gordon
  2. Ian Kinsler
  3. Jason Kipnis
  4. D.J. LeMahieu

Dee Gordon has some of the biggest question marks coming into this season. After the 80 game PED suspension, he was only able to hit for .260 last season. But still had 30 steals. He has elite speed, I am just worried about the potential low average. He won’t help in the power department, but with the lineup behind him (Ozuna, Yelich, Stanton,  and Realmuto) he should have a good amount of runs scored.

Kipnis is a potential tier three guy for me just because of his elite lineup around him, I think the Indians lineup is as good as the Cubs, and Kipnis will have the opportunity to contribute in all categories. By no means will he be a league leader in any one category but he can be a significant contributor in all five.

Tier Five

  1. Johnathan Schoop
  2. Dustin Pedroia
  3. Ben Zobrist
  4. Logan Forsythe

Zobrist multi-position eligible my favorite in this tier, with his ADP around 150 he will be a good late pick.
